Justice Ranjan Gogoi will be taking over as the new Chief Justice of India on October 3, 2018, according to reports. His name has been recommended for the post by current CJI Dipak Misra, who retires on October 2, 2018.

A News18 report stated that after receiving CJI Misra’s recommendation, papers are being finalised to be sent to the Union Law Ministry. Earlier, the government had written to CJI Misra seeking the name of the successor to the post. According to the convention, the outgoing CJI has to send in his recommendation before his retirement.

Usually, the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court is chosen as the Chief Justice of India, as per collegium rules.

Justice Ranjan Gogoi was one of the four judges who held an unprecedented press conference in January earlier this year, expressing concerns over the independence of the judiciary under CJI Dipak Misra. The judges had also raised their concerns over the allocation of cases in the apex court, claiming that junior judges were being given preference over them. The issue of allocation of cases arose after the Justice Loya death case was allotted to Justice Arun Mishra, Justice Gogoi had told the media then.

After the press conference, CJI Misra had dismissed the allegations and had reportedly claimed that his reputation had been damaged. The press conference had sparked speculation that CJI Misra may not recommend Justice Gogoi as his successor.

Born on November 18, 1924, Justice Gogoi enrolled as a lawyer in 1978 and practised at the Gauhati High Court. He was elevated to the position of a judge on February 28, 2001. On April 12, 2012, Justice Gogoi was elevated to the Supreme Court.

He is currently part of the bench that is hearing a PIL on the appointment of the Lokpal and Lokayuktas at the Centre as well as the states, as per a law passed in 2013.

Justice Gogoi will retire on November 17, 2019.
