If you are an Ilayaraja fan, you would have heard of the recent controversy over him being stalled at Bengaluru airport for carrying temple prasad during a security check. If not, read about it here.

Understandably, his fans were angry, and hit out at security officials for ‘disrespecting’ the man. Allegations ranging from parochialism to ignorance have been made.

While Raja sir’s fans poured out their anger, the musical giant himself chose to respond in a mature, humble and rather insightful manner.

Speaking to News18 Tamil Nadu, the channel which first broke the story, Ilayaraja said that the incident was no big deal, and that he was only asked to open the prasad packet and show, which he did.

He further asked why Indians bother themselves with such issues, and said that he has come past far more offensive instances in his life.

What’s more, he more than just understood the position of the security men. “They have come from a different state, having left their kids. They could also be irritated with their tough jobs – they have to be on time, cannot have food on time. They do not know who is who,” he said, adding that he was just a normal person like any of us. He also said that he does not become small by being checked, “I will always remain Raja.”

He also requested the media to not pick up news stories like these.
