The citizens of Hyderabad woke up to a chilly morning on Thursday, as temperatures in the city fell to 16 degree Celsius, which is 3 degrees lesser than the normal temperature for this time every year.
"November has started on a cold note but we can’t attribute it to winter. The official winter season begins in mid-December and extends to February. The mist is a winter component, while the layer of haze remains in the upper strata of the atmosphere through the day," Mr YK Reddy, director, India Meteorological Bureau, Hyderabad told Deccan Chronicle.
The Indian Meteorological Department has also issued a two-day alert, which reads, "Minimum temperatures likely to be below normal by 4 to 5 degree Celsius at isolated places in the districts of Adilabad, Kothagudem, Khammam and Medak of Telangana."
It also said that dry weather was likely to prevail across the entire state of Telangana.
According to a bulletin released by the IMD on November 2, Adilabad recorded the lowest minimum temperature, at 12 degree Celsius, followed by Medak at 14 degrees, Khammam and Hyderabad at 16 degrees and Bhadrachalam at 17 degrees.
Hanamkonda, Mahbubnagar, Nizamabad and Ramagundam saw temperatures dip to 18 degree Celsius, while Nalgonda saw a slight increase in temperature, with 23 degrees.
Khammam saw the biggest deviation from normal temperature, as it was 6 degrees colder than the usual temperature.
“There is a marked difference in the temperatures that are usually recorded during this time of the year. The main reason why the temperatures have nosedived is because of the clear skies. Whenever there are no clouds, heat travels back to the sky," YK Reddy told Telangana Today.
Skymet Weather attributed the weather to dry and cool northerly and northeasterly winds that are blowing over Telangana.
There is also a low pressure area over Sri Lanka, adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal, which persists, the IMD said.
