The Gachibowli police arrested a first-year MBA student from the University of Hyderabad (UoH) on Thursday night, for allegedly sodomising another male student in one of the hostels on campus.

The 19-year-old victim, filed a police complaint against 27-year-old Mohammed Rinish, a native of Kerala, stating that he was sexually assaulted.

The duo were said to have known each other for a while, and reported to be good friends.

“The victim said that at 11:30 pm on January 7, Mohammed Rinish barged into his room at the Men’s Hostel - I and bolted the door from inside. The victim further alleged that the accused forced himself upon him and sexually assaulted him. The complainant said that he knew the accused very well,” Gachibowli Additional Inspector Ramaiah was quoted as saying.

After the assault, the victim reported the incident to officials of the University on January 8, who in turn informed the police.

The police conducted a medical examination of the victim and a preliminary investigation after registering a case, and nabbed the accused.

Based on the complaint filed by the victim, the police have registered a case under Section 377 (Unnatural offences) of the IPC.

The police said that further investigation into the case in ongoing.

According to the University Grants Commission (UGC), there has to be a Gender Sensitive Committee Against Sexual Harassment (GSCASH) in every university with student representatives to sensitize gender issues.

This is not the first case of sexual assault and rape being reported on campuses in Hyderabad.

In 2014, a post-graduate student of English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU) was raped allegedly by two of her friends, on the campus.

The incident came to light when the victim registered a police complaint with the Osmania University police station. The victim alleged that she was raped by two people, including a fellow student and friend in the boy’s hostel on the night of October 31.
