The case of Indian sprinter Dutee Chand has resulted in a landmark verdict by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against a regulation by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).19-year-old Chand had hit headlines after she was banned by the Athletic Federation of India based on the IAFF rules after failing a hormone test. Results of the test showed that Chand had abnormal levels of testosterone in her body, which is a hormone associated with men.The CAS has now suspended the IAAF’s rules related to hyperandrogenism (presence of extra testosterone in the body) for a period of two years.It means that Chand will get to compete at events now, and the athlete was happy to be back in the reckoning. “It was heartbreaking at times and I cried many times. But now I am free to pursue my passion for athletics. I will try to do my best now,” she told PTI.Image Courtesy: Facebook She mentioned that the controversy had not weakened her resolve though, and had never considered leaving the sport behind. “I thought I would continue the fight or otherwise I would groom other athletes who would bring laurels for the country,” she added.Due to aberrations in adrenal or gonadal functioning in some women, the level of the male hormone in their body comes up higher than usual.In a statement, the IAAF had accepted the CAS’ directive.“The IAAF also notes the CAS Panel's view that more evidence is required as to the precise degree of performance advantage that hyperandrogenic female athletes enjoy over athletes with normal testosterone levels, and its directive that the Regulations should be suspended for two years while that evidence is gathered,” it said.Chand is the current national champion in the 100-metre discipline. She was dropped from the Indian squad for the Commonwealth Games after the AFI had deemed her ineligible to compete as a female athlete.
