Heavy rains predicted in parts of Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka on Wednesday

A second flood alert has been issued to 9 districts along the banks of Cauvery in TN owing to higher water discharge from Karnataka’s dams.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy to very heavy rains on Tuesday and Wednesday for few parts of Tamil Nadu.

In a bulletin released on Tuesday, the IMD predicted rainfall over isolated areas in the ghats region of Nilgiris, Dindigul, Coimbatore, Theni and Tirunelveli districts. The IMD also warned that the sea is expected to be rough in parts of Bay of Bengal.

“Fishermen are advised not to venture into sea over Central and North Bay of Bengal and Andaman sea,” the statement said.

The Central Water Commission also issued a second flood advisory to nine districts —  Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, Erode, Namakkal, Karur, Trichy, Thanjavur and Nagapattinam —- along the banks the Cauvery in Tamil Nadu.

“In view of heavy rain in Karnataka and Kerala, there is a likelihood of heavy release of water from Krishna Raja Sagara Dam and Kabini Dam. The combined discharge (approximately 1.4 lakh cusecs) is expected to reach Mettur Dam within two days. Suitable precautionary steps may be taken and downstream areas informed of the release,” read the statement.

In the past 24 hours, Valparai in recorded the highest rainfall in the state with 18 cm rainfall. This was followed by Chinnakalar at 17 cm. Parts of Nilgiris, Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari districts also received heavy rainfall in the past 24 hours.

The Regional Meteorological Centre, Bengaluru has also forecast heavy rainfall in coastal Karnataka, Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada regions till Wednesday.

The IMD centre at Thiruvananthapuram has also forecast heavy to very heavy rains till Wednesday in Kasaragod, Kannur, Wayanad, Kozhikode, Malappuram, Palakkad, Thrissur and Idukki districts.
