The upcoming winter session of parliament could get off to a stormy start with the opposition gearing up to take on the government over recent incidents of heightened communal violence in the country.

In view of the growing climate of fear and hatred prevailing in the country, CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury is set to introduce a motion calling for a resolution against ‘rising intolerance’ under Rule 169.

The resolution states: “The House strongly condemns the atmosphere of growing intolerance manifesting in violence in the country.“

Heated discussions in parliament could be expected over the issues of the recent beef-lynching incident in Dadri, Award-wapsi by Sahitya Akademi winners and killing of rationalist M M Kalburgi.

The Award-wapsi by a certain section of writers and intellectuals has turned into a drama with another section led by Anupam Kher leading an anti-Award wapsi march.

The previous session had witnessed a fiery showdown between the Opposition and the government with hardly any business being transacted and several important bills getting stuck in the process. There are fears that this session could also be a washout like the previous session with the opposition standing firm and refusing to give an inch.
