A massive fire which broke out Saturday in one of the world's tallest residential buildings, the Torch Tower in Dubai's Marina district, has been contained.

The tower reaches 1,105 feet in height and has 79 floors.

According to residents, the fire broke out on the 50th floor.

Eyewitnesses said that the fire has been contained as firefighters arrived quickly on the scene, Gulf News reported.

A witness said flames had shot out from two sides of the building as glass and metal rained down from near the summit of the structure.

The blowing wind with sandstorm caused massive problems.

To avoid falling debris on site, roads within two kilometres from the tower have been closed and traffic in the area was diverted.

Residents of two other nearby buildings in the emirate's Marina district, home to thousands of expatriate professionals, were also evacuated, the witness said.

However, there has not been any reports of casualties.
