A fire broke out in the first floor of the Gulbarga university library in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

University Registrar Dayanand Agsar told The News Minute that the incident was brought to their notice, when some students and staffers who were out on a morning walk at 6 am spotted fire emanating from the building.

“The library building is a two-storey building and the fire occurred only on the first floor. As soon as the students spotted the fire, they informed the university officials. The fire and rescue personnel were then called to douse the fire. Though nobody was injured in the fire, we have lost some old records to the fire. However, we are yet to ascertain the extent of damage,” he said.

Gulbarga fire and rescue personnel said that they were informed at 7.45 am.

A case was registered at Gulbarga University police station, and the police are examining the CCTV footage of the incident.

Kannada news channel TV9 reported that an unidentified person was caught on CCTV camera at around 12 15 am. In the footage, the man can be seen moving around in the library, knocking off books from the shelves. The report states that heaps of books were set on fire on the floor, indicating that the incident could have been a deliberate act.

However, the university registrar refused to divulge information relating to the cause of fire and said that it is for the police to investigate.
