Dominant India record 7th World Cup win in a row vs Pakistan, triumph by 89 runs

After rain interrupted play, Pakistan needed a revised target of 302 to win under the DLS method.

India produced an all-round performance to extend its winning streak over Pakistan in World Cup matches with a 89-run win under the Duckworth Lewis (DLS) method in the group stage match at Old Trafford, Manchester on Sunday.

Chasing a mammoth total of 336 at the start, Pakistan faltered after a steady start. Wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav and all-rounder Hardik Pandya picked up two wickets apiece to reduce Pakistan from 117-1 to 129-5. The collapse put the chase beyond Pakistan's reach and when rain stopped play after 35 overs, Pakistan were way behind the par score on the DLS method. When play resumed, Pakistan needed 302 runs to win off 40 overs but finished up with 212-6.

Earlier in the day, India posted a daunting total of 336 thanks to Rohit Sharma after the team was put into bat by Pakistan. Without the injured Shikhar Dhawan, it was KL Rahul who opened the innings alongside Rohit. The duo, opening together for the first time, put on a 100-run partnership. Rahul was dismissed for 57 but Rohit continued his splendid run with the bat at this year's World Cup to bring up his 24th ODI century.

Captain Virat Kohli joined Rohit in the middle to power India towards the 300-mark. Rohit eventually fell for a superb 140 and Kohli scored 77 in quick time while Hardik Pandya chipped in with a quick-fire 26. Despite a short rain delay towards the end of the innings and an inspired spell of bowling by Mohammed Amir who finished with figures of 3-47 from his ten overs, India managed to post 336 on the board. The total eventually proved too much for the Pakistan batting to overcome.

Rohit Sharma was declared man of the match.

This was India's third win at the World Cup in four matches with the game against New Zealand abandoned by rain. The defeat leaves Pakistan's World Cup hopes hanging in the balance as this is the team's third defeat in five games. India will enjoy five days off with the team's next match against Afghanistan taking place on June 22.
