Actor Dhanush’s highly anticipated gangster drama Vada Chennai, which is being helmed by National award-winning filmmaker Vetrimaaran, went on the floors recently.

During a recent media interaction, Dhanush revealed that 40 per cent of the shoot, shot in a prison set has been completed. The rest of the portions will be canned only next year and the first part of the movie will hit the screens in 2017.

The film will track 30 years in the life of a gangster from 1977 to 2007. The crew is currently shooting for the 1977 sequence and it is to be filmed in two parts over the course of a year.

The film was originally supposed to feature Samantha Ruth Prabhu. However, she chose to exit and Amala, who had already paired opposite Dhanush in VIP and also played the main role in Amma Kanakku, was brought in as her replacement.

Also starring Andrea Jeremiah, Vijay Sethupathi and Daniel Balaji, the film is tipped to be about prison politics.
