Police have seized country-made bombs and other weapons from a group of RSS/BJP workers in Chakkarakkal of Kannur near their party office on Tuesday.
Following clashes between the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which resulted in the murder of two party men during the last week, police have continued their raids and search for weapons.
Steel bombs, swords, axes and iron rods were among the seized weapons.
“Since tension prevails in the district, we were on our regular rounds. It was near the BJP office a group was carrying these dangerous weapons. We could nab only one from the group and all others escaped. We could identify the faces of three of them and they will be arrested soon,” Chakkarakkal Sub Inspector Biju P told The News Minute.
“When violence prevails, it is common that such groups carry weapons. So we were vigilant and had been doing patrolling especially near party offices and other party centres,” he added.
There were around 10 BJP/RSS workers in the group and one among them Mahesh, 35, was arrested by the police.
Police also said that there were around 100 weapons in the seized collection.
On Wednesday, Remith -a BJP worker- was killed at Pinarayi in Kannur. He was killed near the Pinarayi petrol pump in retaliation for the murder of CPI (M) Branch Secretary Mohanan, a couple of days ago.
Both of these murders took place in Koothuparamba, which is in the assembly constituency of Dharmadom represented by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.
Chakkarakkal, where the weapons were seized, is 15 kilometres away from Koothuparamba.
