A conman has reportedly duped a number of people in Hyderabad, relying on the craze for special phone numbers like `9000000000' and `9111111111'. Claiming to provide customers with such fancy numbers for discounted prices, he has cheated a number of them out of large sums of money, reports The Times of India.

According to the report, 14 persons have filed a complaint with the police claiming to have paid thousands for a fancy number. A businessman, who had filed a complaint with the Cyberabad Police, said that he received an SMS offering fancy numbers, normally sold for around Rs 1 lakh, for Rs 25,000 and Rs 75,000.

''With the craze to own fancy numbers being the in-thing, many gullible people even did online transfer of money. After receiving  money, the culprit's mobile phone was switched off. Realizing that something was fishy, the victims approached us,” Cyber Crime Inspector Mohammed Riyazuddin told TOI.

When some of the people contacted asked why the discount was being offered, the fraudster convinced them that certain leftover numbers were being sold at discounted prices. Most of the victims did not approach the telecom operators to confirm if such a sale was taking place at all.
