Cherian Philip spills the beans on Congress-BJP pact in 1991 elections, claims UDF won with RSS’ help

At a time when LDF leaders are alleging a secret understanding between the UDF and BJP, former Congress leader Cherian Philip on Saturday published a Facebook post in which he talks about the BJP-Congress pact during the 1991 Assembly elections.

In his post, Philip alleged that UDF Minister Aryadan Mohammed was the brain behind the Congress-BJP understanding. Adding to this, he said that the decision was implemented by former Kerala Chief Minister K Karunakaran and it had the support of senior Congress leaders like AK Antony and VM Sudheeran.

He then went on to describe the background of this decision.

Before the 1991 elections, the LDF had dominated in the district council elections and Aryadan Mohammed, during a KPCC meeting, had made a strong appeal as to why the Congress needed the support of RSS to win the elections. Along with the support of the Muslim League, Karunakaran implemented this decision, read the post.

At that point of time, AK Antony was the KPCC President, VM Sudheeran was the vice-president and Cherian Philip was the secretary.

According to Philip, Karunakaran promised to help K Raman Pillai from Thiruvananthapuram East and K G Marar from Manjeshwar constituency. In return, the BJP had promised to trade votes in 60 constituencies, where there was only a 5,000 vote difference between LDF and UDF. However, the UDF went back on its promise, thus breaking the pact, he claimed.

Philip also claimed that it was only because of RSS’s help that UDF won the elections that year.
