A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Karnataka High Court seeking the Department of Public Instruction to be the sole authority to declare holidays for schools and colleges.

The PIL has been filed by Associated Managements of Primary and Secondary Schools in the wake of confusion that arose with regard to granting holidays to educational institutions during the 3-day BMTC strike in the state.

The Hindu reports that many private schools, which had announced that they would operate as normal on Wednesday, had to change their decision following orders from the Deputy Commissioner to remain closed.

Pointing out the communication gap between the Deputy Commissioners who are authorized to declare holidays, and the Education department, D Shashi Kumar general secretary, Associated Managements of Primary and Secondary Schools said that there was a lot of confusion as schools received information only on Wednesday morning.

Kumar is reported to have said that declaring holiday to schools that have good transport network is illogical, that would impact the academic calendar.
