A 21-year-old woman was found hanging on Sunday night at her house in Kodichikanahalli.

The deceased homemaker, Pooja Shivraj, had committed suicide by using her veil to hang herself from the ceiling fan, a police inspector at Bommanahalli said.

The incident occurred at around 10.30pm when Pooja’s husband and her other family members had gone to Chikpet for shopping.

In her suicide note, Pooja alleged that her husband Shivraj and her father-in-law harassed her for dowry. Pooja wrote that the duo was pressurizing her to obtain money from her parents, he added.

Pooja’s husband is a private company employee, while her father, Suresh, is a police constable.

Before taking the drastic step, Pooja had allegedly sent messages to her relatives, stating that she was going to end her life as she was unable to bear the torture dished out by her husband and father-in-law.

Upon receiving her message, her relatives immediately went to Pooja’s house in Kodichikanahalli. They informed the police and when they broke open the door, she was found hanging, the inspector said.

Pooja was shifted to a nearby hospital where she was declared brought dead. Her body was taken to St John’s Hospital for postmortem.

The Bommanahalli police have registered a case of dowry death and have booked Shivraj and his father. Shivraj has been arrested and produced before a magistrate on Monday. He has been remanded in judicial custody.
