Inmates at Parappana Agrahara central prison staged a protest on Friday against jaliors demanding exorbitant amount as bribe to allow contraband items to be smuggled in.

According to Bangalore Mirror report, over 45 inmates went on hunger strike after an official’s unreasonable demand. The executive jailor initially demanded Rs 1.25 lakh which was paid after everyone pitched in. However, when an undertrial named Kencha smuggled in five bottles of liquor, they were taken away by the executive jailor, who asked for Rs 25,000 to let it pass. He also threatened to transfer them to other jails if they didn’t give him the amount he demanded as bribe.

“When they didn't pay up, they were beaten with lathis. This led to protests. All inmates of the barrack returned their meal trays untouchedon Friday,” said a prison staff.

“They have submitted their grievance against the executive jailor to executive assistant superintendent, Thimmaiah, who spoke to the inmates,” the prison official added.
