The Bengaluru Kempegowda International Airport is set for a revamp and passengers will not be able to fly from or land in Bengaluru between 10.30am and 5 pm from February 19 to April 30.

The airport will be partially closed for upgradation work on the existing runway.

“Works on a rapid runway will commence during the period. Currently, the aircraft has to ply on a long runway and then turn to take off. The rapid taxiway will cut off the time taken to take off,” said the Inspector attached with the International Airport Police Station.

The initial plan is to build two rapid exit taxiways (RETs) under the existing runway to better air traffic movement from 38 per hour to 48 per hour. Their aim is to finish the upgradation before the onset of monsoon in May, an official at the airport said.

The KIAL airport is the third busiest in the country, but officials say the shutting down of operations for six and half hours will not affect operations much.

In order to compensate for the closure of facilities during the shutdown, the airport plans to enhance flight handling capacity in the hours before and after the closure every day. With the approval of the civil aviation ministry, the authorities have worked out flight schedules with the Air Traffic Control and all airline companies that operate in KIA.

“The airlines have rescheduled their flights and have been accommodated before and after the closure time. This communication was sent out to all airlines before November 2016 itself. Passengers who want to book flights during this period can notice that flights are not available between 10.30 and 5pm. This has been planned in advance to avoid inconvenience,” the official added.

Booking portals are no longer displaying flights during these timings.

The runway will also be closed for rehearsals and during the show of Aero India 2017 between February 9 and 18. “The works are set to begin after the Aero India show. The show will be held between 10.30 am and 4pm,” he added.
