For more than two years now, a man claiming to be an employee of Infosys, has been cheating innocent pedestrians off their money in Bengaluru. The police have been informed several times, but the man still roams free. Sneha Poddar is his latest victim. Around 8pm on Monday evening, Sneha, an analyst working with a multinational in the city, was walking back to her house in Murgeshpalaya near Old Airport Road. A few hundred meters away from her house, a tall, dark and fat person on a Bajaj Pulsar approached her. He introduced himself as Ajay working for Infosys. “At first, he was nice to me. He said that his driving licence had been snatched away by the police and that he was out of fuel, and needed money to get back home. He pleaded me for help,” says Sneha. “Out of sympathy, I decided to give him Rs. 100. I asked him for his phone number which he gave. I even verified it. But as I took out my wallet, he spotted more money and asked me to hand it over,” she says recounting her experience. “Now his tone changed and he spoke to me threateningly. He got aggressive asking me to give him more money, and started getting closer,” she says. Fearing he might attack her, she gave him some more money and ran away from the spot. To her relief he did not follow her. As she got home, she realized she had been conned, “But I was not sure if I should have gone to the police. So I decided to Google his number,” says Sneha. To her surprise, several others have reported similar incidents involving the same person to the Bengaluru police on social media, going back nearly two years. Here are some screenshots from the Bengaluru City Police Facebook page. And here is an entire forum of Bengalureans complaining about having lost money to him, ranging from Rs. 100 to Rs. 5000. Sneha has filed a complaint with the Bengaluru police. The News Minute called the two numbers mentioned above, but both the phones were switched off.
