With Nestle’s Maggi being banned across the country, close to 500 contract workers at Nestle India’s plant in Bicholim, Goa have suddenly found themselves without a job.According to a report in The Times of India, while close to 800 workers are employed by the factory, around 500 of them were asked not to report to work following the nationwide ban on June 5.The report quotes a contract worker by the name of Laxman Gaonkar who says that another job is hard to come by for most workers, even though most of them have enough experience on the job.“They told us not to come to work and that they will call us when production restarts,” says Gaonkar to the newspaper, adding that he couldn’t get another job as he doesn’t have any educational qualifications.Around 60 workers from Jharkhand have also lost their jobs due to the ban on the product. “My job was to mix maida and other ingredients,” says 20-year-old Suresh Singh, who tells TOI that he has been working there for two years. Some workers claim that they haven’t received compensation from their contractors while some also lamented the Maggi ban, but not because it rendered them jobless.“Some people have even been eating Maggi noodles for years now. None of us have developed any health problems,” says Nitin Gaonkar. He adds that many villagers have developed “a taste for Maggi noodles” and that “many eat Maggi at home too”.Also Read: Abbot pharma in the dock for smuggling narcotic cough syrup to Bangladesh
