The News Minute | July 7, 2014 | 6.39 pm ISTIndia’s ban on the import of foie gras, has been welcomed by animal rights activists across the globe. After India’s ban earlier this months, campaigners are now urging the US to follow course. Primarily a French delicacy, foie gras is a food product made of liver of duck or goose, by specially fattening them. It is popular in several other countries including the US and China. However, this food item is a subject of criticism too. The birds are usually force fed, often with the use of a feeding pipe. This is done in order to increase the amount of fat deposits in their liver which swells and lends a unique flavor and texture to the dish.Animal activists across the world deplore this as cruel and inhuman treatment of animals. India is not the only country to put a ban on foie gras. Argentina, Denmark, Poland, Germany and Switzerland are among countries that have banned foei gras in the past.
