In a few hours from now when the United States will be going through the celestial phenomenon of a solar eclipse, Google will make the formal launch of the next version of its famous operating system the Android OS.

In line with the practice Google follows of naming the versions alphabetically the next one is Android O and the letter each time is identified with a popular dessert. Pages have been written on what will ‘O’ represent this time. The overwhelming opinion is that it would be Oreo.

This is a popular cookie brand from Nabisco and is recognized in many parts of the world. As Google did in the case of Kit-Kat, a separate agreement might have to be entered into with the corporate entity to use Oreo for the Android version. Kit-Kat belongs to Nestle and Google had entered into an understanding with the company then.

Apart from unveiling the OS and sharing the actual expansion for the acronym, Google will also highlight the features of the new OS and the improvements brought over Nougat. A tentative rollout plan for the new version and the devices eligible to receive the updates will also be made known in this event.

In addition, Google may use the occasion to let the world know the status of the Pixel smartphones and their release dates.

Google may have deliberately chosen the total solar eclipse day to hold this key event. It is exemplified by the way the company has opened a dedicated page the ‘Eclipse Page’ on its Android site and is trying to make a connection between the ‘O’ shape of the sun and the solar eclipse ring that gets formed and the ‘O’ of the Android O.

It’s only a few hours and the world will know lots more about Android ‘O’.
