Allegedly harassed by her seniors, an engineering college student committed suicide in Andhra Pradesh on Friday.

She was allegedly ragged by her seniors in a private engineering college in Nandyal town of Kurnool district.

Usha Rani, a first year B.Tech student from Kadapa district, ended her life by consuming poison. She died at a hospital in her home town in Budvel.

She had gone home early this month and returned to the college hostel with her father on Thursday.

She told her father that she did not want to study in this college. However, her father is reported to have insisted that she try to stay for one more day and also notified the college management of his daughter’s complaints.

They were returning to Budvel later that evening, when Usha started vomiting.

When questioned, she is reported to have admitted to her father that she had consumed a poisonous substance during lunchtime in a bid to kill herself.

She was admitted to a hospital where she died in the early hours of the day.

Usha's family alleged that she committed suicide due to ragging. The college management has denied the claim.

Reports suggest that, soon after she joined the college, the girl was at the receiving end of lewd remarks.

Some junior students also claimed that she committed suicide due to ragging. They said the management failed to act on complaints.

The police are investigating the case.
