Following the death of Shahjahanpur-based journalist Jagendra Singh, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) based in New York has called for an independent investigation into the case.Singh drew his last breath on June 8. In a statement before his death, he had accused Inspector Sriprakash Rai of setting him on fire on June 1.An FIR has been filed against nine persons, five of whom are police officers and one is the minister for dairy development, Ram Murti Singh Verma.Singh had been using Facebook as a medium to bring to light land encroachment deals made by the politician and had accused the minister and his cronies of fracturing his leg in an attack on April 28.The incident on June 1 left Singh with 60% burns on his body and post his death, an outpouring of emotion on social media reportedly made the police register a case.The CPJ has pointed out that India ranks 13th on their annual Impunity Index, which focuses on countries where the killers of journalists go scot-free.Amnesty International has also called for an inquiry into the matter. “This horrific attack highlights the dangers that journalists can face in doing their jobs,” Shemeer Babu of Amnesty International India said in a statement.The Press Council of India has also called the incident “an attack on freedom of press”.Also Read: They hounded and killed him, a son recounts how journalist father was set on fire
