A man arrested in Uttar Pradesh on July 22 in connection with the murder of a prime witness in the Asaram Bapu case has reportedly confessed before police that the godman has a “fidayeen-like squad” of nearly 2,000 followers whose purpose is to “live and die” for their leader. According to a report in The Times of India, accused Narayan Panday reportedly said the squad would kill anyone who deposed against Asaram. Following the revelation, the police have heightened the security measure for Shahjahanpur girl who has accused Asaram of rape. Prime witness Kripal Singh was shot dead on July 10 by a team whose leader is Panday. Inspector J P Tiwari of Sadar Bazar police station under whose custody Panday is being kept, said that there was possibility of more bloodshed as Panday’s associates are waiting to kill the girl and her father. “Pandey has said that a group of highly motivated and dedicated followers have made it their mission to live and die for Asaram and eliminate anyone they see as an impediment to their spiritual leader,“ Tiwari was quoted as saying by the paper. The police has provided personal gunners to call witnesses and posted armed guards to prevent further threat to them, the report added.
