The News Minute | January 15, 2015 | 8.00 pm IST Follow @HarithaJohn1 February first will be a day one Kerala couple will never forget - not because it is their children’s birthday but because they had to wait 28 long years to celebrate it. Sasidharan , aged 59 and Sujatha aged 51, were six days short of their 28th wedding anniversary when triplets were born to them. “I am really happy that, I can’t take my eyes off them. Sujatha cried when she saw them for the first time as she never expected to become a mother in her 50s” Sasidharan says . The joy on their faces is obvious. However, the struggle this couple has undertaken to get here despite years of failure is quite apparent. This elderly couple from Kizhakkambalam, Ernakulam have been trying different infertility treatments both in and outside Kerala for last 27 years. It was finally via In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) treatment under Dr. Sabine Sivadas that clicked, they say. While hospital authorities have informed The News Minute that both mother and the three babies are perfectly healthy, the triplets - two boys and one girl- themselves will be discharged only after a month as they remain under the minimum weight of 2 kg. Fertility clinics have sprung up across the country - and the crowds that throng such places are a clear indication of the falling fertility rates in India. Sasidharan and Sujatha’s case is a clear example of childless couples reaching out for outside help. According to Sujatha, the period of two weeks during which the babies were monitored in incubators after their birth was very painful for her. “I didn’t want to keep them away from me, I was sad those two weeks. Now I feel that I am the luckiest woman in the world” Sujatha expressed her happiness. Life before the babies’ birth was not easy for me, said Sujatha. “We were completely depressed and sad that we didn’t have kids. We felt as if no meaning to life. I have undergone many treatments, and at last it is fruitful” she recalled She said that the pregnancy period was also hard, with her having faced many health issues. Wishes pour in Now after news of the triplets after so many years of marriage, congratulatory messages have poured in for the couple from Keralites across the world. “We have been receiving calls from different places. I feel really proud. Though we suffered a lot result was happiness” Sasidharan said. Discussing the treatment, Dr. Sabine who took care of Sujatha told TNM that though IVF treatment is not an easy process, proper treatment and care can increase the chances for success. “Age is not a big problem; the treatment should be effective for the success. Sujatha’s case was a challenge” he admitted. He also gave credit to her for having pushed for the treatment despite the possible difficulties associated with it. With the fruits of their success before their very eyes, the couple are happy - they have all that they need , and maybe much more. Tweet
