A 75-year-old woman was brutally assaulted by her daughter-in-law on Wednesday in Haripad of Alappuzha district. Gowrikutty Ammal was assaulted by Babitha Babu (40), as the old woman refused to hand over her pension money to the latter.

Gowri Ammal has four children and she was living with her elder son’s family in her ancestral house, while her son who is married to Babitha stays in Dubai. The woman’s daughter Nirmala told media that Babitha never allowed Ammal’s daughters to visit her.

“We came to know that she used to hit our mother, but she never allowed us to enter her house, so my son went to her neighbour’s house and shot a video of her hitting my mother and showed it to the police,” Nirmala told the media.

“She has got fractures on her legs and hands. Her cheeks are swollen after Babitha slapped her on her face. My mother told me that Babitha used to drag her hair always due to which her head is severely aching,” Nirmala added.

It was after showing the video that Nirmala could enter Babitha’s house with the help of police and panchayat members and rescue her mother, who has been hospitalised.

Gowri Ammal’s husband Kuttappan Achary died 13 years ago.

Nirmala alleged that Babitha had been assaulting Gowri Ammal for the last two years.

“Last day, she hit her for not giving the pension money. Babitha somehow managed to legally get the ownership of our ancestral home from our mother. I will take my mother along with me, I did not know about this earlier, If I knew I would have taken her much earlier,” Nirmala said.
