'This was an unfortunate controversy' says columnist Anil Dharker insisting that actress Jaya Bachchan's recent comments on Happy New Year that made headlines were taken out of context.

Although her comments were discussed all around, she had at least one defender who attempted to set the record straight.

Jaya Bachchan was reported to have said that “Happy New Year was nonsensical” and that “he is a great actor if he could act so stupid in front of a camera like that”.

There was much speculation that Shah Rukh Khan, the star of Happy New Year was offended by her remarks.

Jaya Bachchan herself has not made any comment on the matter so far, but columnist Anil Dharker wrote on website mydigitalfc.com, defending Mrs. Bachchan’s views, saying that they were taken out of context.

Mrs. Bachchan was a guest speaker at the Tata Literature Fest in Mumbai when she made these comments. Dharker says that these comments were made in the context of her discussion with author Siddharth Dahnwant Sanghvi on stage.

"The first comment of Happy New Year being a “nonsensical film” was made when they were discussing the types of films. She said that there were two kinds of films – films which are based on literary works and films which are purely for entertainment purposes. She also went on to say that she enjoyed both kinds, complimenting her son on his performance because she could never do a role as light hearted as his. Thus, explaining her second comment as well."

The article goes on to criticize the media for taking what she said out of context and trying to create a controversy where there was none. The Big B later shared this article on his social media pages in an attempt to clear the air.
