YSR Congress MLA Y Sai Prasad Reddy was on Friday detained at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in Hyderabad after live ammunition in his baggage.
The security personnel at the airport found four 0.32mm bullets in the carry-on baggage of the Adoni legislator and immediately raised an alarm.
Prasad Reddy was reported to be boarding a Thai Airways flight to Bangkok on a personal trip.
However, the RGIA police later found out that the MLA had a valid license for the weapon till 2020, and after following due procedure, the legislator was let off. The police said that a General Diary was made
Sai Prasad Reddy informed one media outlet that he had already deposited the firearm during a recent MLC elections last year, but he had forgot to remove the bullets from his bag.
“The gun was handed over to the armoury in the city during 2017 MLC elections in AP but the bullets remained in the baggage. After verification, the police let me go. By the time we reached the airport from the police station, the flight had left. We booked another flight,” the MLA told TNIE.
In February this year, a 21-year-old B.Tech student travelling to Goa was held at Hyderabad airport for carrying a live bullet.
The fourth year B.Tech student was identified as Vaibhav Kumar Sharma and was reported to be a resident of Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh. A live ammunition of 7.65 mm calibre was found while checking his baggage.
During questioning, Vaibhav claimed innocence and said that he didn’t know how the bullet came in his bag. It was learnt that the passenger had not declared the ammunition at the check-in counter and also did not possess valid documents (arms and ammunition licence).
As the student couldn’t show the documents or a valid licence to justify the possession of the ammunition, he was arrested.
