Director Pa Ranjith, who had last directed Superstar Rajinikanth’s Kabali and Kaala back-to-back, is currently focusing on the biopic of the tribal leader Birsa Munda. While this film is expected to go on the floors soon, the latest is that the director will be collaborating with Arya next. The flick is touted to be on the life of a boxer.

Pa Ranjith had announced that he will be producing a biopic on Birsa Munda on the birthday anniversary of the leader last year. Bankrolled by Namah Productions, the project is touted to be on a massive scale. According to reports, Pa Ranjith plans to have north Indian actors for this project as it is set in the northern parts of India. The film will be based on Mahasweta Devi’s novel Aranyer Adhikar and the director is doing extensive research.

Sources told Cinema Express, “The director has locked the script for the biopic and the team is currently busy with pre-production. It will be a grand film that requires a lot of work and attention, so Ranjith is currently focussed only on this project. Ranjith’s next Tamil film will only be after the Hindi project and it might star Arya.”

Pa Ranjith’s Neelam Productions made its debut with the critically-acclaimed Mari Selvaraj film, Pariyerum Perumal, which chronicles caste-based issues in Tamil Nadu. Featuring Kathir in the role of a youngster from a backward caste who faces discrimination, the film impressed both critics and audiences alike and has been identified as one of the most important films in recent times.

The director’s third production venture, announced recently, will be directed by Suresh Mari, who has been Ranjith’s assistant for quite some time. Featuring Kalaiarasan and Arvind Akash, the project will go on the floors soon and is expected to hit the screens in the first half of 2020. 'Vada Chennai' is the third collaboration of Dhanush and Vetrimaaran, which became the highest-grossing film in Dhanush’s career.
  • Sunday, July 14, 2019 - 12:14

The sequel to Dhanush-Vetrimaaran’s iconic movie Vada Chennai, which chronicled 30 years in the life of an accidental gangster in north Chennai, may have been shelved, say reports.

The team, which had announced that the movie will get two more sequels when the movie had released in 2018, had shot around 20% of the second part when the decision to drop the project was taken, say sources.  “Though Vada Chennai did well at the box office, the residents of north Chennai weren’t happy about the way their lifestyle has been portrayed on-screen. Vetri Maaran is now finding it tough to shoot for the remaining sequences in the same locality. Moreover, a couple of artistes who played pivotal roles in Vada Chennai got busy with other projects. That’s why the film has been shelved,” reported DTNext.

Meanwhile, Vada Chennai will get a prequel titled Rajan Vagaira. The announcement was made by director Vetrimaaran during a media interaction, who added that the prequel will be a web series for a digital platform.

“We’d like to explore the prequel idea. I think it’d be best suited as a web series on some digital platform. The prequel will be called Rajan Vagaira, and it will track the rise of Rajan’s character in Vada Chennai and how he built his empire,” he said.

Vada Chennai is the third collaboration of Dhanush and Vetrimaaran and has succeeded at the box-office breaching into the Rs 50-crore club. Vada Chennai also surpassed Dhanush's blockbuster Velai Illa Pattathari to emerge as the highest-grossing film of his career.

Vetrimaran has completed the shooting of Dhanush- starrer Asuran, a revenge-based thriller based on Tamil novel Vekkai.  GV Prakash Kumar has composed music for the movie while Velraj has handled the camera. Vivek Harshan has taken care of editing the movie. Asuran is bankrolled by Kalaipuli S Dhanu under his banner V Creations.
