Youth attacked by bike-borne assailants in Bengaluru late at night; robbery suspected

The hotel management trainee with ITC Gardenia sustained injuries on his neck and is currently recovering at Mallya Hospital.

A youth working as a hotel management trainee in Bengaluru was attacked by a group of bike-borne assailants in the wee hours of Sunday near the fuel station next to ITC Gardenia on Vittal Mallya Road.

The youth, Neeraj Joshi, who works as a trainee at ITC Gardenia hails from Uttarakhand. He was walking with a group of five colleagues near the ITC Gardenia building around 1 am on Sunday. As they neared the fuel station next to the hotel, Neeraj broke off from the group to attend a phone call.

That is when two persons arrived on a bike, slowed down near Neeraj, and pulled out a knife and attacked him. But the bike-borne assailants were surprised to see Neeraj’s colleagues rushing to help him. The assailants were under the impression that Neeraj was walking alone. His colleagues were walking behind him when the attack occurred and came to his rescue when they saw the assailants pull out the knife. However, the panicked assailants managed to escape from the scene of the crime.

Neeraj, who sustained injuries on his neck, was taken by his colleagues to the nearby Mallya Hospital. His colleagues then registered a case with the Cubbon Park Police Station.

Police officials said that they are yet to establish a motive but suspected that it could have been an attempt at robbery.

“We don’t know the motive behind the attack, but we suspect it was an attempted robbery. Our investigation is underway, but we haven’t identified the assailants yet since the people at the scene could not see the vehicle clearly,” said Shivakumar, a police official at the Cubbon Park Police Station.

Neeraj is currently recovering at Mallya Hospital. The police confirmed that they have recorded his statement and that they will intensify patrolling in the area in the coming days.
