Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu expressed his condolences over the deaths of the intermediate students who took their lives after the Telangana State Board of Intermediate Education (TSBIE) declared exam results on April 18, and urged students to not take extreme measures.

“I am saddened by news reports that 16 Intermediate students from Telangana state have died from suicide on failing in the exams. The death of students with such bright futures has shaken me. My deep condolences to their families,” Naidu tweeted on Tuesday morning.

Students, parents, activists and political leaders from across the state have been protesting the alleged errors in the results committed by the TSBIE. Major discrepancies have been reported in the results since they have been declared, with students who have taken the exams being marked absent, and students who have performed well in previous exams scoring shockingly low marks.

There have been reports of nearly 20 students taking their lives after finding out that they hadn’t passed their intermediate exams, which are a state board equivalent of class 11 and 12 in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, administered by the Board of Intermediate Education.

Addressing intermediate students, Naidu wrote on Twitter, “I have one request to the students. Life isn’t just about passing exams. Exams are just recognition of your talent. But your lives are more important than exams. Your lives are a lot more invaluable.”

He urged them to not to take extreme steps due to failure in exams. “Do not end your lives prematurely and shatter the hopes your parents had on you, just because you’ve failed in your exams. Do not cause the grief of losing a child to your parents at this age,” he said.

Students and parents have claimed that Globarena Technologies Pvt Ltd, the firm hired by the TSBIE for data and result processing, is responsible for the alleged errors in the results. It has also been alleged that the TSBIE has violated several norms in awarding the contract to the firm.

Naidu advised students to think beyond formal education and work towards skill building in fields that interest them.

“You have a bright, golden future ahead of you. Many successful people in the history of the world were unsuccessful at first…  Education is just for gaining knowledge, it isn’t your entire life. Failure is the first step to success,” he said.

“Work hard and study again for good results. Keep building your skills. Show talent in your chosen areas of interest and succeed. If you work hard, success is yours, a golden future is yours. Your development and growth in life is the biggest gift you can give to your parents and to your nation,” Naidu added.

The Telangana HC has called the situation a ‘grave disaster’, and has ordered the state government to take responsibility to resolve the issue and conduct re-evaluations.
