On Tuesday night, Prema and her family were returning home after watching a movie when, to their shock, an apparently drunk MTC driver allegedly abused her in front of her family, and then went on to grope her. Little did she imagine that what awaited her was worse, she had to spend two days in jail for 'assaulting' the driver, reports The New Indian Express.

“He groped me so hard that the left a nail mark on my chest. I was shocked. I immediately hit him with my chappal. I believe any woman would do the same in the situation,” Prema told The New Indian Express.

But following the incident, the family along with four children had to be in two police stations for 12 hours. After which, four people of the family were taken into police custody for two days in Puzhal Central jail on charges of grievous assault, criminal intimidation and uttering obscene words in the public place.

The incident happened on Tuesday night when the family was returning after watching a movie in Perambur’s Brinda Theatre and were on two bikes. Prema, the victim, her sister-in-law and one child were on one bike. Prema’s husband S Vinod, her brother and three children were on another bike. As there were crossing the Anna Nagar bus depot, a man in khaki was standing on the road, apparently drunk, Prema moved on without hitting the man. But he was abusing Prema and called her a sex worker, according to The New Indian Express.

Prema’s husband and brother confronted him but soon six men from the depot reached the spot. Prema was called up and asked to take the children as they did not want them to see them getting assaulted.

By the time Prema reached the place, the six had taken a bus and left the place.

After seeing her husband and brother’s condition, she decided to find those men and question them.

She found the bus, went and questioned Narasimhan, an MTC bus driver why he hit her husband and brother. He again began abusing her and when she asked him to come to the police station, he groped her. Immediately she hit the bus driver, according to The New Indian Express.
