After his regressive 2013 gem, ‘R...Rajkumar’, Prabhu Deva's 2014 gift to us is the ludicrously bad, ‘Action Jackson’. A film so misogynistic, that female lead, Sonakshi Sinha spends the first half trying to get a peek at Ajay Devgn's penis. Why? It brings her good luck. No, I'm not making this up.
If that doesn't deter you from treading on, the second half is gory, violent and filled with random songs and cheesier-than-cheese dialogues. Yami Gautam's only job is to get punched and stabbed, Kunal Roy Kapoor is the overweight sidekick who gets slapped over and over and Manaswi Mamgai has a soft porn-like introduction and provides the ‘girl-gone-crazy’ psycho thrills.
It's a film that left me numb, angry and feeling sick. The rampant sexism, the objectification of all the female artists, the FACT that kids will be watching this gore fest (courtesy a very, very lenient U/A certificate. Good job, Censor Board) and the genuine disbelief that so-called top stars have read this script and still agreed to be part of this trash! It's all very frustrating.
I have a few questions: Can Ajay Devgn watch this film with the female members of his family? Has Sonakshi Sinha ever stopped to think about the social repercussions of the films she happily promotes?
My parting comments however, are reserved for the captain of the ship.
Dear Prabhudeva, if you hate women, seek therapy. Stop directing vulgar, crass, chauvinistic films under the guise of making a ‘masala’ film. And lastly, congratulations! You just managed to beat ‘Humshakals’ to snag the 'Worst film of the Year' title! And that my friends, is no mean feat.
