When former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of India Shahabuddin Yaqoob Quraishi and Nepal’s present Election Commissioner Ila Sharma met at a conference in Mexico in September last year, it was a unanimous vote of love. Sources say, the civil servants however face ‘mild’ resistance from their respective families.

Speaking to the Telegraph, Quraishi admitted to sharing a personal bond with Ila and about their ‘speculative’ marriage plans. Their first two attempts to tie the knot -according to him- did not materialize due to some reason or the other.

A 1971-batch IAS officer of the Haryana cadre known for his wit, 69-year old Quraishi is an alumnus of Delhi’s St. Stephen’s college and was earlier married to well-known journalist Humra Quraishi whom he later divorced.

Forty-nine-year old Ila -a former journalist herself- took over as Nepal’s CEC in 2013 for a six-year term. She has a degree in Sanskrit and Nepali literature from the Sampurnanand Sanskrit University in Varanasi and also another in law from the Gorakhpur University.

Her husband Nawaraj Poudel was a police inspector who was killed in an attack by Maoist insurgents in Western Nepal around 15 years ago. She has two daughters.

Reports say that the wedding is likely to be a low-key affair and is expected to be solemnized in the near future.
