Popular messaging platform WhatsApp went down just after midnight on New Year, affecting several users in India and other parts of the world.

Just as people were ringing in the New Year and getting ready to send across their greetings, the app crashed leaving users disappointed.

A WhatsApp spokesperson apologised for the inconvenience and said that the issue had been resolved shortly after the outage.

The outage was reported just after midnight in India, according to several users on Twitter.

India represents WhatsApp’s biggest market with around 200 million users.

Earlier, in November 2017, WhatsApp had stopped worked globally with users across the world facing difficulty in accessing the app.

Down Detector, a website which specialises in websites and app outages, said the app was not functional across geographies and added that connecting to the app was the most reported problem.

Before that, WhatsApp had crashed twice in the same month in May 2017.

On May 17, the issues faced by users related to sending and receiving of messages as well as logging in.

Earlier in the same month, on May 3, WhatsApp refused to start up for several users showing ‘connecting…’ for several minutes.

Even in 2015, WhatsApp had faced a similar outage around New Year.

People on Sunday night were unable to send New Year wishes but many saw the lighter side of it and came out on Twitter to express their feelings.
