Two construction labourers were killed on Monday and four injured when a wall of an under-construction building collapsed in Hyderabad. The deceased were identified as Bharatamma and Kistamma, according to a report.

The incident occurred in Madhapur at around 10.30am, near the Information Technology hub. Police said the workers were buried under the debris of a wall, which suddenly caved in.

Rescue workers pulled four labourers out alive. They were shifted to a hospital, where the condition of two of them was stated to be critical. Officials of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), Police and Fire Services were pressed into service.

The wounded were identified as Balraju, Papaiah, Hanumantha and Shantamma.

Mayor Bonthu Rammohan and Commissioner, B Janardhan Reddy are supervising the rescue and relief operation, the report said.

Bharatamma’s body was sent for an autopsy test while Kistamaa’s family refused to receive her body, alleging lack of safety precautions by the construction company.

They also demanded compensation from the company.

According to The New Indian Express, the Telangana Labour Department officials said ex gratia payments of up to Rs 8 lakh (Rs 2 lakh from the Hyderabad municipality and Rs 6 lakh from the Labour Department ) would be gien as compensation to the next of kin of the deceased.

Police told the newspaper that a case would be filed against the company and the contractor.

Eyewitnesses told Telangana Today that the side walls of the cellar caved in and buried the workers under a large amount of construction material.

In a similar incident 11 construction workers died when they were buried under the debris, after a multi-storeyed under construction building collapsed in Hyderabad in December 2016.

Police had then booked a case of negligence and culpable homicide not amounting to murder against the owner of the construction company for building without permission and in violation of all rules.

Even the Deputy Commissioner of the GHMC along with another official was suspended.
