It’s Madras Week, and the US Consulate General in Chennai has been celebrating "the rhythm of everyday life in Madras" to commemorate the city's 377th birthday, which was on August 22.

In a series of videos, officials of the Consulate General can be seen taking part in the festivities, the traditional way. 

Here's them eating a traditional meal on banana leaves with their hands at the Kasivinayaga Mess.

Here's one officer trying to learn the ancient art of flower braiding. And no, it’s not at all as easy it looks, as she learnt.

What's Chennai without silk dhotis and Kanchipuram sarees. Here the officials learn to drape a silk dhoti and a Kanchipuram saree at Rasi Silks in Mylapore.

And as the day gets warmer and more humid, there's nothing like tender coconut water to beat the heat. And so, the officials try their hands at cutting open tender coconuts. 

Here's learning the art of Kolam making.
