Hear Bharatanatyam and you think tradition, however contested that may be. But when the names Poonam and Priyanka are attached to a performance, then you’re in for some robotic fun as well.

The latest video of the Chicago-based twins uploaded on YouTube on February 27, is the kind that would make you want to get up and dance with them; even if you are likely to fail miserably in trying to keep up.

Some of their other videos, especially their choreography of the song Ramta Jogi from the 1999 film Taal have been hugely popular with over 7.16 lakh views on YouTube. On their YouTube channel, the pair describe themselves as: “Twins. Dancers. Choreographers. Indian-American. We aim to inspire.

Poonam and Priyanka, who are of Indian origin, blend robotic dance elements with Bharatanatyam, but even when their fingers recreate traditional mudras, their bodies are in sync with the heady beat of the fusion music.

Soon after the video, called ‘VGO Carnatic trap’, begins, and towards the end, they move like robots – pausing for microseconds as they move their bodies – and the effect is surprisingly good. The effect is a seamless blend, not a clash; neither with the dances moves, nor the music.

Wearing the traditional sari, make-up and with jasmine flowers in their hair, the duo gives a performance that holds you mesmerized.
