The official teaser of Suriya’s upcoming film NGK Nandha Gopalan Kumaran directed by Selvaraghavan was released on Thursday. It was originally planned for a Thursday evening release in theatres, but the team advanced it to an online release in the morning, allegedly because of piracy concerns.

The one-minute teaser clip begins with Suriya’s voice-over introducing his character. In it, he tells us that “people call him NGK”, hinting that he could be involved in politics.

Actors Rakul Preet Singh and Sai Pallavi make an appearance in the teaser as well. While Rakul dressed in a suit asks “Politics?” with a look of uncertainty, Sai Pallavi is seen offering words of encouragement to Suriya’s character. “Kumara, go ahead dear. If you enter, even sewers will turn pure,” she says.

The teaser shows a bloodied hand clawing the air, Suriya walking to drum beats while a police personnel accompanies him with riot gear, and people chanting his name “NGK”. Suriya is also shown driving a tractor. There’s a wall filled with posters of all political leaders including Gandhi, Anna, Periyar, Ambedkar, MGR, Karunanidhi, Manmohan Singh and Sonia Gandhi amongst others too.

The teaser ends with Suriya dressed in a white shirt, standing by the door and uttering the word, “Kaathiruppom” (we will wait).

NGK is Selvaraghavan’s first release in 6 years. His last directorial was Irandaam Ulagam starring Arya and Anushka Shetty that released in 2013. He also has two other delayed projects - Nenjam Marapadhillai, a gothic horror film starring SJ Suryah, Regina Cassandra and Nanditha Swetha, and a romance drama titled Mannavan Vanthanadi starring Santhanam.

NGK was officially launched in February 2018 and was expected to release for Deepavali last year. But its release was delayed due to Selvaraghavan’s health issues. When fans began speculating on the film being shelved, Selvaraghavan tweeted, requesting them to be patient.

“My humble request. We work hard and we work in silence. Updates will come at the right time. Not every third day or every week. And i strongly believe that if you give us strength we will work much more harder towards our goal. #NGK.” read his tweet.

Bankrolled by SR Prakashbabu and SR Prabhu under the banner Dream Warrior Pictures, the film has Yuvan Shankar Raja for music, Siva Kumar Vijayan for cinematography, and Praveen KL for editing.

The film’s release date is yet to be announced.
