In an attempt to decrease pollution and the number of vehicles on the road, the Karnataka government plans to hike registration fee and other charges for people who want to own a second car, reported The Times of India.

A senior official of the urban development department said,“We're working on this plan since higher tax on the second vehicle would discourage citizens from owning many vehicles and also raise additional revenue for the government. Before we take it forward, we have sought experts' opinions on how to go about it.”

According to TOI, the additional tax will also be imposed on organisations, institutions, societies and companies which buy vehicles for their employees.

However one loophole in the plan is that if another member from the same family wants to buy a car then the additional tax will not be applicable.

MN Sreehari, head of the state government's traffic advisory committee, said that the proposal will be submitted to the government for approval soon.

However some experts are sceptical about the proposal.

“The professed aim to discourage multiple ownership of vehicles may not fructify because many vehicle owners don't mind spending huge amounts just to get a fancy registration number. Such people certainly won't hesitate shelling out the extra tax. However, the move will surely fill up the coffers of the state government,'' said VN Madhusudan, a traffic expert.
