Thalapathy Vijay’s Sarkar has struck gold at the Box Office. The AR Murugadoss directorial is a political drama and has zoomed past Rs 100 crore club in just two days.

On the opening day itself, the film grossed a whopping Rs 30.5 crore in Tamil Nadu, thereby setting a new record for the biggest opener ever. According to sources in the trade, the film has now emerged as the highest grossing south Indian film of 2018 earning over Rs 220 crore at the ticket window, surpassing the lifetime gross of Rs 218 crore earned by Ram Charan’s Rangasthalam.

This is the sixth 100-crore grossers for Vijay and fourth in a row after Theri, Bairavaa and Mersal.  

The film, which opening to mixed reviews from critics and general audiences alike, revolves around one man’s mission to fight for his voting rights after someone casts his vote illegally and he challenges the system in the process.

Actor Vijay plays an NRI who, upon his return to Chennai to cast his vote, realizes it has been cast illegally.

As he decides to dig deep into the matter, he stirs up a political turmoil. The film also stars Keerthy Suresh, Radha Ravi, Varalaxmi Sarath Kumar and Yogi Babu in key roles.

In Tamil Nadu, the film has already grossed over Rs 100 crore and it is believed that it will earn around Rs 140 crores in the state to break even. In Telugu states, with a share of over Rs 6 crores, the dubbed version of Sarkar has been adjudged a hit. The only place where the film performed way below expectations is in Kerala where, despite taking a terrific opening, the collections dropped from the second day.
