National award-winning filmmaker Vetrimaaran and actor Dhanush have teamed up for the fifth time in upcoming Tamil thriller Vada Chennai, a trilogy set in north Chennai. Having completed the shoot of the first part in the franchise, the makers on Thursday confirmed that the highly anticipated film will hit the screens this September.

Dhanush took to Twitter to share that the trailer of the first part will be released on July 28, which happens to be his birthday. He also wrote that the film will be a September release. An official poster was released to mark the announcement.

In a recent interaction with Film Companion, Dhanush said that they’re aiming to bring Vada Chennai to cinemas in August. The film’s story will track 30 years in the life of a gangster, played by Dhanush, who had set aside over 200 days for this epic project.

Tipped to be the most ambitious project in the career of Vetrimaaran, most popular for helming Aadukalam and Visaaranai, the film will be shot in a most realistic manner featuring raw and hard-hitting action and rather than just focusing on the lifestyle of a gangster, it will also focus on their emotional side. In the film, Dhanush plays a carom champion.

The film also stars Kaaka Muttai fame Aishwarya Rajesh in a key role which was originally offered to Amala Paul. The film also features Andrea Jeremiah, Daniel Balaji, Kishore and a bevy of actors in crucial roles.

Most of the first part was shot in an elaborate jail set that was erected in Chennai on a lavish budget. The film also stars filmmaker Ameer in an important role and the rumour has it that this role was originally offered to Vijay Sethupathi, who opted out of the project for reasons unknown. Produced by Dhanush’s Wunderbar Films, Vada Chennai has music by Santhosh Narayanan.
