The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) led by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu is welcome to join the alliance being formed to take on the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government in the next Lok Sabha election in 2019, said senior Congress leader M Veerappa Moily on Tuesday.

The former union Law Minister, while responding to a PTI reporter’s question on if the TDP was welcome to join UPA, said, “ Naturally. We would like to have a proper understanding between the opposition. This (TDP) is one such opposition party.” Moily also expressed his hope that the Mahakutami alliance in Telangana between TDP, Congress, Telangana Jana Samiti (TJS) and Communist Party of India (CPI) would win the state Assembly elections on December 7.

The TDP had earlier this year walked out of their alliance with the NDA over the Centre’s refusal to grant special status to Andhra Pradesh.

Moily’s “welcome” gesture to the TDP comes one day after Naidu visited Delhi to meet with Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader Mayawati, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah and CPI leaders D Raja and S Sudhakar Reddy.

The Congress, led by Rahul Gandhi has been in talks with various political parties to enter an alliance to take on the BJP led NDA. Though TDP and the Congress have been traditional rivals in AP, ever since the TDP-Congress alliance in Telangana, the AP Congress has softened their stance against the Naidu government.

The APCC president N Raghuveera Reddy in his press conference on Saturday alleged that the BJP and YSRCP were conspiring to destabilise the AP government, in what appeared to be a clear change of stance from the AP Congress camp.

Responding to the gesture by Moily, sources in the TDP said, “Only Chandrababu Naidu is qualified to respond to the former minister's welcome gesture.”
