Actor-turned-politician Rajinikanth expressed his grief at the passing away of DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi.

“This day when my Kalaignar has passed away is an unforgettable black day in my life. I pray for his soul to rest in peace,” Rajinikanth said on Twitter.

Karunanidhi passed away on Tuesday at 6.10 pm, a medical bulletin by Kauvery Hospital stated. He was 94. The leader was admitted to the hospital in Chennai late on July 26 following a sudden dip in blood pressure.

Several DMK supporters had waited outside Kauvery Hospital, ever since he was hospitalised. They braved the rains and thronged outside the hospital for hours, shouting slogans that asked him to rise once again.

On Tuesday evening, a medical bulletin from Kauvery Hospital stated that Karunanidhi’s condition was extremely critical and unstable and that despite maximum medical support, his vital organ functions continue to deteriorate.

On Monday evening, the hospital had said that there was a decline in the health of the DMK president and that the following 24 hours would be crucial for the prognosis.

Following the stabilisation of his blood pressure, he was admitted to the ICU for Urinary Tract Infection. His health has been fluctuating since then, with the hospital releasing seven health bulletins over the last ten days.

Several state and national leaders had visited Karunanidhi or enquired about his health in the past few days. Condolence messages have been pouring in on social media from members of the public and political leaders alike after the news of his death.
