A Navy officer from Mumbai was sentenced to two years in prison on Friday for sending vulgar messages and rape threats to a 16-year-old girl in Hyderabad, over Facebook.

The accused has been identified as Dilip Kumar Sinha (33), a Lieutenant at the Colaba naval base in Mumbai.

According to reports, he had sent a friend request to the victim on Facebook In 2010. When she accepted the request, he proposed to her and asked her to be in a relationship with him.

When the victim refused his proposal, he allegedly harassed her with vulgar and objectionable messages.

He also reportedly threatened to rape her.

Following a complaint filed by the victim, Dilip was arrested by a CID team from Hyderabad in 2010.

The Deccan Chronicle reported that this case was said to be one of the earliest cases of Facebook-related crime in India.  

“In 2010, the CID sent requests to the facebook office in California, USA, seeking details of the user. Facebook provided the details and evidences. All the evidences including the chat history were submitted to the court,” a senior official from CID told Deccan Chronicle.

Dilip was found guilty under 67, 67-B (c) (d) of Information Technology Act, 2000, and Section 509 of IPC.

This includes charges of publishing or transmitting obscene material in electronic form,  publishing or transmitting of material depicting children in sexually explicit act, and Word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman.

According to a report in PTI, First Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, Moka Suvarna Raju, also imposed a fine of Rs 15,000 on him.
