The annual Indian Film Festival Melbourne is one of the biggest and prestigious film festivals conducted outside India. This year, the event is scheduled to happen between August 10th and 22nd.

Reports say that two Malayalam films - Minnaminungu and Manhole – have been selected to be screened at this prestigious event.

While Manhole had won the Best Film and Best Director awards in the Kerala State Film Awards last year, Minnaminungu portrays the relationship between a single mother and her daughter trying to migrate to Canada with her boyfriend. Surabhi Lakshmi went on to win the Best Actress award at the 64th National film awards for her performance as the single mother trying to save money for her daughter’s higher studies in Canada while the daughter has plans to leave the country to settle with her boyfriend.

The film has been directed by Anil Thomas. The film had Rebecca Santhosh, Krishnan Balakrishnan and Balu Narayanan playing pivotal roles.

On the other hand, Manhole is the tale of a manual scavenger’s daughter. The film has been directed by Vidhu Vincent and she has now earned the distinction of being the first woman director to be awarded the Best Director Award by the Kerala government. It may be recalled here that Manhole marked her directorial debut.

Reports say that the theme for this year’s film fest is ‘Diversity’ and the opening the event would be Lipstick Under My Burkha. Directed by Alankrita Srivastava, the film has Konkona Sen Sharma in the lead role with Ratna Pathak, Aahana Kumra and Plabita Borthakur, Sushant Singh, Vikrant Massey, Shashank Arora, Vaibhav Tatwawaadi and Jagat Singh Solanki as part of the star cast.

In the 12-day long film fest, a total of 60 movies would be screened.
