Apart from being known as God’s Own Country, Kerala has also earned the title of being "Gold’s Own Country". However, the mania for gold has earned the attention of the Indian customs department for all the wrong reasons.  Recently, two districts in Kerala have found their spot on the crime-map that security agencies often use to geo-locate places which are on the wrong side of law. Koduvally municipality of Kozhikode and the district of Kasargod are the two places in Kerala to have entered the map, as many smugglers and carriers of bulk gold hailed from these two locales. According to The New Indian Express, as many as 178 out of the 475 post-seizure gold raids in the county by intelligence agencies and various wings of customs last year were conducted in these two localities. The state witnessed a record number of gold seizure cases in the last year, with smugglers coming up with "innovative methods" to smuggle, some even hiding gold in their own body. Last year also saw repeated cases of bulk gold seized at various airports, mainly Nedumbassery airport in Cochin and Karipur airport. In a recent incident, customs personnel seized seven kg of the precious metal worth about Rs 1.75 crore at the Karipur international airport on Tuesday.
