Bengaluru police have rescued a woman whose body had bite marks all over after she was allegedly locked up and tortured by her husband. The police on Sunday rescued Shobha (30) from her house in Moodalapalya in a weak state, with black-and-blue marks and severe bite marks on her body. According to the Vijayanagar police, she was harassed by her husband Venugopal (45) for dowry.  Police say that the couple reportedly had an argument on Saturday night, after which Venugopal allegedly assaulted her and locked her up. Neighbours informed Shobha’s parents but they were unable to rescue her as she had been locked up. Police finally rescued her at around 2 am on Sunday. In a separate incident on Sunday, a 20-year-old newly married woman committed suicide in her house in Laggere allegedly because she was also tortured by her husband and in-laws for dowry. Based on the complain filed by Bhagya's parents, police have registered a case of death due to dowry harassment against Bhagya's husband and in-laws. Under Section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Code, the death of a woman within seven years of her marriage would be inquiried into by a magistrate. This provision was created in a bid to keep a check on dowry harassment.
