With the driver of the Mercedes which killed a man on April turning 18, the question of his juvenile status when the incident occurred has once again thrown up a debate.

On April 4, 32-year-old Siddharth Sharma was allegedly run over by a Class 12 student who was out to celebrate with friends after his exams were over. According an NDTV report, the teen turns 18 on Friday. He was booked by the police and arrested, but let off as he was a minor.

Siddharth’s family is demanding that the accused be treated as an adult. However, under the amended Juvenile Justice Act, the Juvenile Justice Board will decide whether the teen should be sent to a juvenile home or be tried for the offence as an adult.

NDTV also reported that Siddharth’s family had obtained CCTV footage from an apartment complex on the road on which he was killed. The footage shows that Siddharth was thrown around 10 feet into air while the Mercedes neither swerved before hitting nor slowed down after ramming into him.
